Getting There

The Choices….

By air

With plenty of low cost flight options departing regularly from UK regional airports, flying is the obvious choice for many people holidaying in the French Alps.  There are five main airports serving the main ski areas – Geneva (Switzerland), Lyon, Chambery, Grenoble and Turin (Italy) – and it is important to choose the right one if you want to minimize your transfer time at the other end. (See our resort guides for more information).  Onward transfer can be arranged by hire car, taxi or bus – our staff will be pleased to advise you if you have any specific queries about transfers and/or parking.

By train

Going by train is an increasingly popular choice.  Travel on a highspeed TGV European Ski Train from Paris or take a direct train from the UK.  Eurostar services depart from St Pancras, Ebbsfleet or Ashford International Station to various stations in the heart of the French Alps including Bourg St Maurice, Moutiers and Aime La Plagne. Onward transfers can be made by bus, taxi or hire car from the station, or in the case of Bourg St Maurice for Les Arcs, a quick journey up the mountain on the funicular railway.

By car

Many families opt to drive all the way from the UK as it can work out considerably cheaper and you’ll have plenty of space for all your luggage.  The starting point for most people is Calais, reached via the Eurotunnel or cross-Channel ferry and from here set off along the A26 motorway through Reims and Troyes towards Dijon/Lyon.  Most of our resorts are within an 8 to 10 hour drive of Calais but you may wish to make an overnight stop en route to break the journey.  Low cost motels such as ‘Formule 1’ have basic family rooms for around £30 a night, and other chains include Campanile and Ibis.  Motels are clustered around the edge of larger towns and are easily accessible from the motorway – you can pre-book or decide en route when you would like to stop.  Some operate a card entry system enabling guests to check in late at night with a credit card.
